Built for the 1939-40 World’s Fair, today’s Queens Museum was originally called the City of New York Building. During the 1964-65 World’s Fair, it housed the City’s official display: a scale model of the five boroughs comprising an area of some 9,335 square feet.
Commissioned by Robert Moses, the Panorama required $673,000, three years, and a team of more than 100 full-time workers from Raymond Lester & Associates to realize. Since the Fair, it’s been updated five times — although the last major overhaul took place in 1992.
However, since the launch of the Museum’s “Adopt-A-Building” program in 2009, single structures are at least being added with greater frequency. The Panorama now contains over 895,000 buildings — and that’s not counting the miniature planes coming and going from LaGuardia Airport every few minutes or so.
