Trigger

it’s no comfort to her

the windows here get barred on down

she’s sheltered from the outside

but can’t stay safe inside her home

from words like dagger tongue ties

to shard of glass that skim the bone

but tonight

there’s a trigger of hope

fate may allow

tonight

she’ll be wipin’ away

the weight from her brow

tonight

hey tonight

oh maybe tonight

it’s no comfort to her

in three more hours he’ll come on home

evict her from the kitchen

and seize the couch and TV show

she’ll flinch up in the bedroom

and read between his fits below

but tonight

there’s a trigger of hope

fate may allow

tonight

she’ll be wipin’ away

the weight from her brow

tonight

hey tonight

oh maybe tonight

she shakes at the top of the stairs as he’s sleeping

follows her feet down as each step is squeaking

louder and loud

but tonight

there’s trigger of hope

fate may allow

tonight

she’ll be wipin’ away

the weight from her brow

tonight

hey tonight

oh maybe tonight
